José Sérgio Franco
Dr José Sérgio Franco was born in Cachoeiro de Itapemirim in the state of EspÃrito Santo, Brazil, in 1951 and moved to Rio de Janeiro in 1969. He graduated from Medical School in 1976, and completed his medical residency in 1978, Masters in Orthopaedics in 1982, and PhD in 1984 at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ). He currently holds positions as Associate Professor and Head of the Department of Orthopaedics and Traumatology of the UFRJ Faculty of Medicine. He is also Full Professor of the postgraduate course in Orthopaedics and Traumatology at the Carlos Chagas Institute. His main area of expertise is orthopaedic trauma surgery.
He is a member of the Brazilian Academy of Medicine and Rehabilitation, American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, and Socio Economic Committee of the AO Foundation. He has held several leadership positions including President of the Brazilian Society of Orthopaedic Trauma (1999-2000), Brazilian Society of Orthopaedics and Traumatology (2003), Brazilian Society of Surgery of the Shoulder and Elbow (2004), Orthopaedic Society of Portuguese-speaking countries (2009-2011), and Latin-American Society of Orthopaedics and Traumatology (2013-2014). He is currently the SICOT National Delegate of Brazil and will be the President of the SICOT Triennial World Congress in Rio de Janeiro in 2014.
Dr Franco is a co-editor of the Journal of Techniques in Orthopaedics (United States) and the Brazilian Journal of Orthopaedics. He has had several books and book chapters published in and outside Brazil. Many of his papers have been published in scientific journals, mainly in orthopaedic trauma. He has delivered hundreds of lectures at conferences in Brazil and abroad.
Dr Franco has been conferred with the title of Honorary Citizen of Rio de Janeiro and has also received the Tiradentes Medal of Merit and Pedro Ernesto Medal of Merit from the City of Rio de Janeiro.
Dror Paley
Dr Dror Paley was born in Israel and grew up in Canada. He graduated Medical School (1979) and residency (1985) at the University of Toronto. After fellowships in hand, trauma, paediatric, and Ilizarov surgery, he introduced the Ilizarov method to North America in 1987. He was Full Professor and Chief of Paediatric Orthopaedics at the University of Maryland (1987-2001) and then became the Director of the Rubin Institute (2001-2009). Since 2009, he has been the Director of the Paley Advanced Limb Lengthening Institute in West Palm Beach, Florida.
Dr Paley is best known for his landmark research in the field of limb lengthening and deformity correction. His textbook Principles of Deformity Correction is considered the Bible of deformity correction surgery. He is also the author of 4 other books, 47 book chapters, 129 peer reviewed journal articles, and 54 video productions. He has presented over 2,000 lectures at international meetings in six languages. This is his 12th visit to India since 1989.
He was a cofounder of the LLRS in 1989, ASAMI International in 1993, and is President-Elect of the International Limb Lengthening and Reconstruction Society and Chairman of its 2015 Miami Conference.
He has received international awards from orthopaedic and non-orthopaedic groups including a Gubernatorial Citation for his humanitarian work and 8 honorary international society memberships. His Paley Foundation helps children and doctors from developing countries.
Dr Paley is known as an innovator who has changed orthopaedic surgery by his ideas, including deformity planning principles, the Multiplier method of discrepancy prediction, reconstructive procedures for congenital deficiencies (superhip, superknee, and superankle, ulnarization). He has also helped develop new external fixators and implantable lengthening devices. At the Paley Institute he continues to treat patients from over 70 countries and to innovate new procedures that will benefit generations of future patients and surgeons.

Shanmuganathan Rajasekaran
Dr Shanmuganathan Rajasekaran is the Chairman of the Department of Orthopaedics & Spine Surgery at Ganga Hospital, Coimbatore, India. He is the Adjunct Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery of Tamilnadu Medical University, Member of the Faculty of Medicine, Annamalai University, and Member of the Planning Board, Bharathiar University. He is the second Orthopaedic Surgeon from India to be the Hunterian Professor of the Royal College of Surgeons of England.
Dr Rajasekaran is the Immediate Past President of the Indian Orthopaedic Association, President of the Association of Spine Surgeons of India, Immediate Past President of the International Society for the Study of Lumbar Spine (ISSLS), Canada, and Past President of the World Orthopaedic Concern, United Kingdom.
He is the Deputy Editor of the Journals SPINE, Global Spine Journal and Journal of Craniovertebral Surgery. He is on the Editorial Board of Bone & Joint Surgery (B) and European Spine Journal.
His research interest relate to disc biology and nutrition, imaging of spinal cord injuries, and open injuries for which he has won numerous international awards including the prestigious ISSLS Prize for Spine Research for 2004, 2010 and 2013, EuroSpine Open Paper Award for 2008, Macnab LaRocca Research Award, Canada, 2005, Sofamer Danek Award of the ISSLS for the years 1996, 2002 and 2006. Nationally, he has also won numerous awards including the Silver Jubilee Research Award of the Medical Council of India in 2002, the Hari Om Ashram Award of the Medical Council of India in 2005, Tamilnadu Government Scientist Award in 2000, and Silver Jubilee Award of the IOA in 2003.
He is the Chief Editor of a Video Atlas of Spine Surgery, ASSI Textbook on Spinal Infections & Trauma, has 125 publications in international journals, 44 national publications, and 215 international and 359 national presentations.

Steffen Ruchholtz
Prof Dr Steffen Ruchholtz studied medicine from 1985 to 1991 in Ulm and Munich, Germany. He was trained in general surgery from 1992 to 1998 in the Department of Surgery of the Ludwig-Maximilians-University of Munich. From 1998 to 2007, Ruchholtz practised orthopaedic trauma and hand surgery at the Department of Trauma Surgery of the University of Essen in leading positions working as deputy head from the year 2000 on. In 2007 he became Full Professor and Chairman of the Department of Trauma, Hand and Reconstructive Surgery at the Philipps-University of Marburg, Germany. He is a board certified surgeon in general, orthopaedic trauma and hand surgery.
An early, important scientific objective has been the care of severely injured patients. In 1993 Dr Ruchholtz was one of the founders of the TraumaRegister DGU® of the German Society for Trauma Surgery (DGU). Dr Ruchholtz was directly involved in planning and establishing the project TraumaNetwork DGU® and in 2006 became speaker of AKUT (Committee on the Implementation of the TraumaNetwork DGU®). In this position he is in charge of the organisation of the TraumaNetwork DGU® with more than 600 certified Trauma Centres in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg.

Another strong research interest is the treatment of the geriatric patient with complicated trauma. Dr Ruchholtz published his work on less invasive approaches in the treatment of geriatric fractures of the humerus, the acetabulum and periprosthetic fractures in national and international journals.
Dr Ruchholtz is the editor of two textbooks on the treatment of orthopaedic trauma. He has published more than 150 peer reviewed journal articles and held more than 550 lectures at national and international meetings. He has received awards from orthopaedic and other medical societies. Dr Ruchholtz is a member of the Executive Committee of the German Society for Trauma Surgery, member of 8 scientific societies and reviewer for 10 national and international medical journals.
